Steps to getting a credit card deal

Having a current account with a bank could make it easier to get a credit card from them, as increasingly banks are making it a condition of their credit card deals.

New figures from the UK Cards Association suggests lenders, including HSBC, NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland, are being increasingly picky about who they lend to.

48 per cent of credit card applications were turned down last year, a 7 per cent increase on 2008, and industry experts say things like missing a payment or paying a bill late are now having more of an impact on applications than they would have done in the past.

Customers are being urged to check their credit file is accurate, so they don't get turned down unnecessarily.
