Use a prepaid credit card abroad
Holidaymakers are being encouraged to use prepaid credit cards when abroad, so they don't rack up any unnecessary charges.
David Black of Defaqto also reminds people still planning on using their regular credit card that they need to tell their card provider when and where they are going, otherwise they risk their card being blocked.
"For that reason it is also advisable to take more than one card so you are not stranded without access to cash," he recommends.
Travellers planning on using debit cards also need to be careful. Although most transactions in the UK are free, this is not the case abroad.
On top of a transaction charge of up to 3.75 per cent, debit card users also face a conversion fee of up to 2.99 per cent.
