Families face large premiums for Christmas getaway
Families hoping to go away over the Christmas holidays are set for a nasty shock when it comes to the price of a family vacation.
Research has found that the difference in price for breaks during the Christmas school holidays and those during term time has increased significantly.
Holidays to sunny destinations have the largest difference in price. Research carried out by Santander Credit Cards has found that the average price of a winter sun holiday is 39% more expensive during the school holidays.
Winter breaks to popular destinations such as Florida, Egypt and Dubai saw premiums of as much as 92% - costing a family of four an extra £1,287.
“The cost of jetting abroad in search of winter sun during the school holidays has simply become too expensive for many families. However, for those willing to opt for a ‘staycation', our research has found some great deals right here in the UK,” said Callum Gibson, Managing Director at Santander Cards.
The research found that holidays within the UK, to popular destinations like London, Brighton and Edinburgh, have actually gone down.
Prices for a ‘staycation’ have gone down by an average of 2%, with even more savings to be made through discounts and special offers.
“There are lots of great offers to be had, not just on accommodation, but also on activities. What's more, families choosing to stay in the UK can save even more money on their travel costs by using the Santander 123 Cashback Card, which pays 3 per cent cash back on fuel,” Mr Gibson added.
For those who are planning to go abroad over the Christmas period, there are a range of prepaid travel money cards that can help cut the cost of a holiday.
These include Escape Travel Money Card from Phones4U, the My Travel Cash Multi Currency Card, and the Travelex Cash Passport Dollar Card.
