With just under 4 million Brits leaving the UK for Christmas and New Year, travel experts ABTA have announced that romantic European cities such as Paris and Rome are expected to prove popular with last minute travellers.

According to the report, most Brits will be seeking a traditional white Christmas rather than heading to sunnier climes as the festive season officially gets underway.
Thanks to its close proximity and ease of access, Europe has unsurprisingly featured prolifically on ABTA’s list of popular destinations with romantic cities such as Paris and Rome featuring alongside popular ski resorts in the winter wonderlands of Austria and Switzerland.
According to ABTA’s Chief Executive, Mark Tanzer, Europe has had “some of the best snow fall for years” meaning that the magical allure of a traditional Christmas is within grasp of British holidaymakers.
All of these destinations offer great festive scenes with a white Christmas guaranteed in regions lying in the shadow of the impressive Alps or Pyrenees mountain ranges.

New Year traditions

Of course, it isn’t just the winter scenery which is attracting tourists – New Year celebrations are also drawing large crowds.
Cities such as New York and Paris are known for their impressive firework displays, which are enjoyed against the unbeatable backdrops of the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty.
Meanwhile, those interested in a natural light display are expected to follow the hoards of visitors who travel to Lapland to catch a glimpse of the illusive Father Christmas during his busiest time before marvelling at the wonder of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).

Getting there

According to ABTA’s research, major airports will process millions of passengers with almost 2 million expect to pass through London Heathrow alone. In addition to this, hundreds of thousands are expected to enter the European mainland by crossing the English Channel via the Channel Tunnel or ferry crossings.
Demonstrating the diversity and versatility of modern travel options, this ease of access mean there is still plenty of time for travellers to book last minute holidays to foreign locations for the New Year.
Obtaining a travel money card prior to departure is quick and easy; meaning financial worries don’t need to get in the way of the festive celebrations. These are a prepaid card which allows you to take an appropriate amount of money away without facing the security risks of carrying potentially high figures in physical currency.
