Debit cards could protect like credit cards
Shoppers could avoid being out of pocket if they used credit cards, according to the government's consumer watchdog, Consumer Focus.
But if you don't like buying goods on credit, the only way pay online is with a debit card.
The government has now hinted that it might tighten the rules to give greater protection to shoppers using debit cards, as part of a shake-up of the card industry.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Kevin Brennan the consumer affairs minister, says cards should become clearer, more transparent and "people should not feel fiddled".
Today is the deadline for parties to submit their ideas of how to improve credit cards. Any changes accepted by the government are likely to be announced next month.
