Christmas need not be expensive this year after a taste test revealed Lidl’s bargain Christmas pudding outperformed other more expensive brands.

To help you keep your Christmas spending within budget use a prepaid card.

The results from Which?’s latest taste test proved discount goods could be a Christmas treat as the £2.99 Lidl Deluxe Matured Christmas Pudding got a top score of 82 percent.

The panel of judges praised the cheapest pudding in the test as having a great taste and brilliant texture.

“After you’ve tucked into your turkey, it’s the Christmas pudding that rounds off the perfect Christmas meal,” said Martin Hocking, Which? editor.

“Our taste test experts love nothing better than finding delicious food that’s great value and Lidl produced a winner with its bargain pudding.”

Other top puddings on the list were the £13.99 Waitrose cherry and pecan topped Christmas Pudding with Remy Martin which got a score of 81 percent.

While The Co-operative’s Truly Irresistible Christmas Pudding got an impressive 80 percent and is priced at a reasonable £5.50, this pudding is also suitable for vegans.

Three expert pudding tasters tested 36 samples and scored them for taste, texture, aroma and appearance.

Christmas Money Saving Tips

Plan – before you start your shopping plan out a budget for each person you are buying a present for. You can do this with a prepaid money card to make sure you do not spend more than you had intended.

Buy bargain food and drink – As the article shows, bargain food and drink can taste just as good as more expensive brands. What tends to be the main difference is how they are packaged so once a Christmas pudding for example is out of the box no one will know where it came from.

Travel – If you are travelling around the country to visit various relatives over the festive period book your train and coach tickets in advance to get a discount.

Leftovers – Every family will inevitably have leftovers from their Christmas lunch so do not waste them. Using turkey in sandwiches or curry the next day can help cut the cost of your food shopping bill.
