Is Santander instigating a change in the banking culture?
Compare Prepaid brought you the news yesterday that Santander has revamped its 123 World cashback credit card so that cardholders can claim 3% cashback on rail fares.
But Santander hasn’t stopped there. They must have been feeling generous as the week commenced because since Monday (24 September), new and existing Santander and Abbey for Intermediaries mortgage customers who open (or have previously opened) up a new Santander 123 Current Account will earn 1% cashback on their mortgage payments.
The offer is available for customers that pay up to £1,000 a month by direct debit and could save them up to £120 a year on their mortgage.
The card, which has a monthly fee of £2, now rewards cardholders with 1% cashback if they pay their water, council tax and Santander mortgages by direct debit, 2% on gas and electricity bills paid on the same way and 3% on phone and broadband bills paid for via direct debit.
Phil Cliff, Director, Mortgages and Unsecured Personal Loans, at Santander, said:
“Since we launched the 123 Current Account in March this year we’ve continually engaged with customers to find out what they would like from the account. Overwhelmingly the response was that they’d like cashback on their Santander mortgage payments.
“We believe the addition of mortgage direct debits to the 123 Current Account makes this the best loyalty current account in Britain today.
“The attractive in-credit rate on this current account makes it even easier for customers to manage their finances, by reducing the need to continually move money between savings and current accounts. With this, you can really see how it all adds up.”
Lloyd’s of London: can banks really change their ways?
Lloyd’s of London is also a testament to the fact that big financial institutions are capable of an attitude overhaul. The chairman of Lloyd’s, John Nelson, said at the company’s annual City dinner on Wednesday that the culture at banks should be fixed “fundamentally and honestly”.
He stated: "What we've heard a lot of in the last few years are pretty unconvincing claims in public that banks, for example, have cleaned up their act while in private they seemed to be waiting for the storm to blow over and return to 'business as usual'. Well, I don't think it is going to blow over."
If you are thinking about switching bank accounts, it is worth spending a few minutes comparing the options to make sure you get the best possible deal.
