I was a little skeptical of taking a prepaid card abroad over Christmas so made sure I loaded just a minimum amount to trial the card first, before going out to NY for the holidays.

The card arrived promptly and was easy to load online once I had tested it. I loaded it twice whilst abroad and used it for shopping as I know there is an ATM charge, plus the banks in NY charge their own fee on top (ergh!).

I saw the card after Martin Lewis had recommended it and thought I would give it a go. Overall I am really happy as the rates were so much better than my debit card usually charges out there! I did not have to speak to customer services so can't comment on that but otherwise it worked fine and saved me some cash. So I am happy :-)

It would appear the Fair fx card really hasn't been tested properly. We took it to use on a driving holiday through France, Germany, Austria and Italy - hardly "back of beyond" places. During our time in Italy it actually became embarrassing to use as even though it was accepted, often it appeared PC Technologies - the company who service the card - on behalf of Newcastle Building Society - have a system that does not work consistently, leaving us red faced on several occasions and having to incur ATM charges to physically withdraw the cash! Incidentally - PCT feel their service is not at fault (in denial.) We are still awaiting the outcome of our complaint and will not be using the card again or recommending anyone else to do so. We were even accused by PCT in one of their exchanges of having insufficient funds in the account! Appalling customer service. One final word of warning, it appeared the card also magically turned into an unwanted credit card as towards the end of the holiday after constantly withdrawing cash from ATM machines, it allowed us to go overdrawn?! Bizarre - as the whole idea is you load it up to use as a debit card! It was only a few euros, but we have no intention of paying back the issuer's mistake!! There are far better alternatives!

The card itself works fine, application is easy and the fees are reasonable. However, the are money grabbing, misleading and the customer service is terrible. While in Spain we rented a Quadbike and a block was put on my card for €300. We returned the bike and the transaction was reversed. But after two days the money has still not gone back to my card. I returned to the merchant and he confirmed and showed me that the transaction was cancelled and that FairFX was responsible for the delay. After a two day delay i finally got a reply to my email, shame i was already back in the UK. The representative said that it will take 21 days for the money to go to my card, or I could let the merchant sign a form and they could release the money. Obviously that was impossible as I was no longer in Spain. I was never notified of this and is nowhere stated in the T&C's of FairFX. I think it is very misleading and caused great distress to my holiday. When the 21 days finally passed I got charged €12 to withdraw my balance! How else was I supposed to get the money out as there is no feature to return the balance to your bank account. Terrible service and would not recommend it to anyone.

This site is offering a free fairfx (prepaid mastercard) cars usually (£9.95) really useful card, good exchange rates and get around ryanairs £5 card fee's. Saved £60 booking a holiday through this.

They expire in 3 years or so, its worth getting one with the minimum amount to keep handy to get around ryanairs booking free.
