/> New figures show that spending on credit and debit cards increased by 7.1 per cent last month.

The information from Barclaycard is based on a comparison with February 2009.

They also reveal that there has been a slight decline in spending compared to January 2010, but Stuart Neal, Head of UK Payment Acceptance, says it’s 'typical' of this time of year and is caused by a return to 'more regular spending patterns' after the January sales.

An alternative to spending on conventional credit cards could be getting a prepaid card. With one of these, you can only spend what you load up onto it, so you needn’t have any worries about building up debts.ADNFCR-2939-ID-19690761-ADNFCR
