LINK-enabled Cards to make Charity Donations at ATMs

UK banks, building societies and cash machine operators have agreed to work together to enable Brits to make charity donations at ATMs.

The UK cash machine network LINK announced the partnership, which will see all 100 million LINK-enabled cards be able to donate through ATMs.  LINK enabled cards make up almost every debit and ATM card issued by a major UK bank.

Whether a Particular ATM provides this transaction will be down to the individual ATM operator, and the choice and number of charities involved will also be down to them too so a diverse range of charities will be supported across the country.

“I am delighted by the support of LINK’s member banks, building societies and ATM operators for enabling charity donations at cash machines,” said Francis Maude, cabinet office minister.

The agreement between LINK and UK banks followed survey evidence of widespread support from cardholders – which will enable them to give to charity whenever they like in an easy to do process.

“With more than 10 million LINK ATM transactions a day, this is a real opportunity to raise significant sums of money for good causes,” added Graham Mott, LINK senior spokesman.

The value customers are likely to be able to donate via an ATM ranges from pre-set values such as 10p up to £10, to entering a specific amount of their choice.  The programme is set to be launched in 2012.
