A new service for vulnerable people struggling with debt has been launched by a leading charity.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) is offering additional assistance to those in debt who are identified as vulnerable, either due to their age, mental health or capacity.
The new Debt Advocacy Service will aid these people complete forms and undertake welfare benefit checks, and where appropriate CCCS will explain these circumstances to their creditors, for example, if they are terminally ill.
“Debt problems are incredibly difficult and stressful to deal with,” said Maggie Kirkpatrick, CCCS managing counsellor.
“We are launching this service to ensure that those who are vulnerable not only receive free, independent and impartial debt advice, but extra support according to their needs.”
Last year the debt charity counselled 12,000 people who were claiming Disability Living Allowance, in addition to the growing number of older people who they help with debt problems.

If you are struggling with debt you may benefit from a prepaid card. These can be purchases online, or through a retailer for a small charge which is usually reimbursed once the first sum of money is loaded onto the card.
A recent survey by R3 revealed a third of the nation believe their financial security will become less certain over the next six months, with many expecting them to worsen in the New Year.
Since last quarter the number of people feeling this way has increased by seven percent, while the number of people who believe their finances will improve has fallen from 35 percent to 22 percent.
