Job Security more Important than Wealth

Public response to the Office for National Statistics’ ‘what matters to you’ survey revealed having a job is more important than the salary.

The survey by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will provide an indication of how to measure national well-being, which aims to provide a picture of the state of society outside of economic figures.

The study revealed job security, relationships with family and friends, and health are at the top of the list of priorities for 88 percent of the over 2,000 participants.

“The most relevant measures of well-being should encompass the elements of life that matter to people most,” commented Paul Allin, ONS director of measuring national well-being.

“We have had a good response to our debate and there are some interesting themes of what matter to people coming through.

Other themes that have been revealed as important life factors for many include ensuring their children have a better life and a nice place to live when they are older.

Job security and not wealth was viewed as important, freedom of society, and spiritual and religious beliefs also made the list.

The debate will run until April 2011, and the development of the ‘quality of life’ indicators along with the impact of progress on the environment will be assessed to track the nation’s well-being.
