Shoppers who also like to do their bit for a good cause are being urged to consider taking out a charity credit card. The cards donate a small percentage of the amount spent on them, usually to a designated charity.
Now Virgin has become the latest company to offer charity credit cards to its customers.
The Virgin Charity Credit Card will donate one per cent of all spending to a charity of the user's choice, making it proportionally the highest giving card in the market. The card also automatically includes gift aid, increasing the amount donated to charity.
But charity cards have also been criticised, with some claiming that the amount donated to charity only works out as a tiny proportion of the amount spent on it.
One alternative, suggested by Moneysavingexpert Martin Lewis, is getting a cashback credit card and donating the money as you spend, and donating money as tax-exempt Gift Aid.
