Brits having multiple Christmas celebrations

Several Brits are now celebrating Christmas not once but twice, with many enjoying more than one Christmas day this year.

Almost half of us are intending to enjoy multiple Christmas days this year, as we attempt to accommodate as many friends and family members as possible.

Research carried out by American Express Platinum Cashback Card has revealed that 49% of Brits will have numerous Christmas dinners and gift exchanges.

It was also revealed that 30% of us will be having multiple celebrations on Christmas day itself, flitting between family, friends and in-laws.

“The face of contemporary Christmas in the UK is changing,” said Julie Hay, Head of Platinum Cashback Card at American Express.

“Thanks to extended families and the rise in multiple celebrations; many people no longer have just one big gathering around the tree. Having loved ones to stay and going to stay with others is all part of the tradition and fun of Christmas but the costs can add up when visitors descend.”

These multiple celebrations do not come cheap, as the research also revealed that the collective cost of hosting Christmas will reach over £4 billion.

Those who are having people to stay at Christmas are expected to spend an aver of £144, while a quarter said they plan to spend in excess of £200.

“While most hosts would like the support, many guests don't always offer. Asking for financial contributions from a guest can be a tricky subject to raise,” added Ms Hay.

“While not a solution to having an awkward conversation with a guest, by using a rewards credit card to purchase all the additional and unexpected costs for hosting Christmas, consumers can still earn Cashback to lighten the load - which could be especially welcome if they open their doors to guests next Christmas too.”
