Part of the increase is due to the recient postal strike where shoppers who made online purchases were worried about deliveries not turning up or being held at Post Office depots.
Retailers have seen an increase in high street sales but a reduction online where shoppers have fears over postal deliveries.
It is estmated that consumers will be buying more than two thirds of gifts in person with just a quarter saying that they would do some of their shopping online.
Credit Card fraud cases have leapt almost 50 per cent since the introduction of the chip and PIN system which was supposed to cut the problem. The total fraud hit a record high of £609.9million in 2008, which was 14 per cent up on the previous year.
