November 29, 2010

An impressive 25.4 million adults regularly use their credit cards online to make purchases new research reveals.

The average monthly spend per person is £192, equating to a total collective spend of almost £6.4 billion according to Sainsbury’s Finance.

Many people spend more than this though with 1.2 million spending over £1,000 per month online with their credit card.

“The growth of online shopping in such a short time is staggering,” commented Stuart McKeggie, Sainsbury’s Finance head of cards.

DVDs and music are the most popular items bought online followed by books, fashion items and holidays.

The 35-44 year olds is the group that puts the most online shopping on their credit cards; their average monthly spend is £214, closely followed by the 45-54 year olds’ £207.

The 18-24 year old age group were shown to spend the least, about £30 less than the national average.

Those in the South East spend the most online via credit cards with a regional average of £236 per month,  double that spent in Scotland.

Compare Credit Cards

A huge 5.9 million credit card users have started shopping online in the last three years showing the growing trend of making purchases this way to bag a good deal.

Whether you spend a large amount regularly on your card or little and not very often you should compare the different credit card offers on the market.

For those who make regular payments on their cards you can benefit from a card which offers a discount on purchases made this way, you may also want to investigate a card offering 0% on purchases.

If you use your credit card for Christmas shopping make sure you keep a record of how much you have spent so you are prepared for the bill in the New Year.
