Santander attempts to improve poor customer service record with SMS alerts

Santander bank has launched a new service offering text alerts to all of its current online banking account and savings customers.

With its latest banking service, Santander aims to improve communication with clients and help them to have better control of their finances.

From now on, all Santander’s customers registered with online banking can sign in for this new service. Users can receive information directly to their mobile phones regarding their current account or savings balance, deposits and debits.

According to the bank, these text alerts include large deposit/high value credit alerts, which are useful to know when a large amount of money set aside by the customer has been spent; low balance alert, for clients who want to get a text as soon as they reach a pre-selected balance; high value debit alerts, to show when large debits leave a customer's account; and high balance alerts, used to confirm when the total balance goes over a certain amount – also set by the customer.

Santander has been working to improve customer service recently after surveys reveal the bank often comes last for customer satisfaction in surveys. Last week the bank launched a new online banking service that allows customers to manage all of their bank accounts from one single platform.

Customers are able to see information for all of their Santander current bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards in one place.

Clients can also subscribe to paperless statements, which allow mailed statements to be turned off and all their statements stored online for easy access.

In addition, the bank has also updated its Online Banking Guarantee including the addition of a valuable new service. Now, if funds are taken from a customer's account without permission, Santander will pay back any loss incurred from fraud, up to the value of the amount fraudulently taken.
