Barclaycard has partnered Orange to present the first contactless mobile payments service, so users can swipe their mobiles at terminals to complete transactions.
‘Quick Tap’ is the first in the UK to offer Orange mobile phone users the ability to make purchases of £15 or under with the swipe of their mobile phone, and not have to enter a PIN.
There are currently 5,000 stores across the country that has these readers where mobile phone users can use this method of payment.
Everywhere users see the contactless payment symbol they can use their Quick Tap application - places like Pret A Manger and Little Chef already have the technology to do so.
“We no longer use our mobile phones simply for talking and texting – apps, cameras and music players allow us to use them for a lot more,” commented Pippa Dunn, Orange Vice President.
“Making contactless payments with your mobile is a natural and really exciting innovation which we’re pleased to be leading on in the UK.”
MasterCard is providing the payment capability for the contactless mobile transactions – and all these types of transactions are covered by the same 100 percent fraud guarantee as standard Barclays and Barclaycard transactions.
Over 55s and Mobile Banking
Research by First Direct reveals while the over 55s are quite used to using the internet, they are less likely to be adept at using mobile banking.
First Direct claims half of its silver surfers use their internet banking service, which is only 10 percent less than those under 55 years old.
However, when it comes to customers’ phones, just one in five over 55s have signed up to a service which tells them their bank balance and last few transactions on their phones. This is compared to almost 43 percent of the remainder of their customers.
