New insurance specially designed for grandchildren’s health
Changing circumstances require a change in attitude. In this case, today’s increased role that grandparents have in the life and care of their grandchildren has resulted in the first insurance specially designed and tailored to children and their common ailments.
Research carried out by Aviva, the insurance company who launched this offer, shows some intriguing data relating to this growing trend. Over half of the grandparents surveyed (51%) now look after their grandchildren for a significant period due to the absence of parents, with the vast majority (88%) saying this extra time has brought them closer together.
The majority of grandparents have a genuine stake in the wellbeing of their grandchildren; over a third (34%) say they help teach them hobbies and life skills and almost a quarter help with homework (23%).
Rebecca Paterson, head of marketing at Aviva, said: "Whilst the NHS is particularly good at providing paediatric care, especially for the very young, we recognise that there are some services which can be complemented by the private sector. A growing number of grandparents are playing a more active role in their grandchildren's lives and helping to protect their health is another way they can provide support and peace of mind for their own children."
The scheme, called Child Health Solutions, offers grandparents access to diagnosis and cover for treatment at private facilities for an affordable, fixed premium. It also includes benefits such as dentistry, physiotherapy and speech therapy that have been specially chosen to complement the paediatric services available on the NHS. Further services such as travel expenses and parking costs if their child has to stay in hospital are also available.
