A campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of things like credit card fraud has been launched in the UK.
The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) has joined forces with other organisations to highlight the issue.
Many people are still having credit card details stolen which can lead to them being refused credit in the future.
Detective chief inspector Nick Downing from the Met’s Economic and Specialist Crime Command says “We have seen some people sending significant sums of money, sometimes their life savings to criminals in the post or via money transfer.”
Figures SOCA show Brits are defrauded of around £3.5 billion a year from criminal gangs using marketing techniques.
Colin Woodcock a fraud expert from the agency says “To anyone who thinks this sort of thing can’t touch them we’d say complacency is a big risk. Once people get wise to one scam, the criminals will switch to something else”.
